India is one of the largest food retail markets in the world, and is expected to be valued at Rs. 61 lakh crores by 2020. Though India’s food processing industry accounts for 32% of its total food market, yet India has been termed as the worst violator by Food Sentry, a global food sourcing monitoring agency. Another shocking fact comes from USA’s Food and Drug Administration whose report published in February 2015 indicates that over half of the imported snack products that were banned, originated from India on account of presence of pesticides, mold and bacteria. Thus it becomes imperative for regulators already short on resources to allow credible third-party testing and certification to improve the current prevailing standards and taking it to global standards.
